As such, instructors play more of a role of facilitating the interest as compared to stoking it.

Matured students bring along a wealth of life’s experiences. With years of employment as well as juggling household matters, they probably do not need to be coddled into completing assignments. By empowering them to take charge of their time and resources, the objective is thus to cultivate discipline amidst a life already riddled with busyness of family, work and now study. All these channels of diversity add value to the adult learning environment.

In teaching adults, it is also recommended to set a different pace. Various challenges may beset the best of plans as the matured students may not be able to grasp the essence of the topic taught in a flash. Perhaps caused by physical impairment, the teacher thus makes adjustments to accommodate the students accordingly. As the reed ages, it is not easily bent. Resistant to change, adults are a classic case of unbending reeds. Teachers therefore need to dig deeper into reasons instead of just focusing on rectification.

Respect is to be earned and not demanded. As both parties show adequate levels towards one another, it is bound to reap great benefits for all.
