Cell phones can be rightly called as the technological marvels and it is difficult to imagine a life without them. Anyone who is skeptical about its uses ends up finally convinced that they are indeed a boon to the modern world. Although, they have become unavoidable things in our life, most of us do not think over on how cell phones work. Actually, we are of the mistaken impression that the working of a cell phone is too complex for a layman to understand.

Though modern cell phones have advanced features that beat their conventional counterparts their basic working principle still remains voice and data communication over the network. It basically deals with the transmission of radio waves from one base station to another. When calls are made to another cell phone, the base station of that cell phone gets the signal. A base station is essentially a wireless communications station which is set up at a particular geographical location.

The base station covers a certain geographical area and this area is called as a cell. When a customer uses a cell phone to call another cell, a signal is essentially transmitted to the base station of that cell phone. There, it is assigned a specific radio frequency channel in order to facilitate conversation between the callers and also to speak without any sort of interference.

After the signal is processed, this signal is transferred to a call switching center. From this center, the call is transferred to another cell phone sometimes directly or through the help of a local carrier. Although, the entire process may seem complex to a layman, it just takes only a single minute to connect to the cell phone you are calling.

The process of voice getting converted to radio frequency is different in the conventional cell phones and in the modern advanced cell phones which have assorted features. The conventional cell phones used analog technology to convert the voice to radio signals and then decode these signals back to voice. The modern cell phones use digital technology for this process of converting voice to radio signals. Now the market is flooded with the most advanced 3G mobile phones which facilitate the use of voice and data services simultaneously.

The advent of cell phones have literally changed the lives of the people as people can attend calls and carry out their business even while traveling . In times of emergency, these cell phones are a boon because the concerned person can get help from others wherever he is.
