How Do Rockets Work?

Many inventions are made and will be made in the future. One of such great inventions is the rocket. The working of which is a wonder created by man and has put many people in surprise. Most people would be very much interested in the working of a rocket. As this wonder machine has been created based on some simple physical principle it will be easy to understand how a rocket works even to a layman if it is explained in simple and easy to understand words. The basic principle it works on is the action and reaction principle that was founded by Newton, a well known physicist of the sixteenth century. He had observed and he told the world that forces in nature always come in pairs and this true for all forces.


Around us this is happening often and if we are observant, we can know the application of this principle in many phenomena around us. For example, the shot of a gun works on this principle. The action of triggering a bullet from the gun would have given a push to the gun causing a reaction.


This principle is applied to the working of a rocket too. The rocket moves upward with the help of the force created when the combustion in its engine takes place and a thrust of a huge amount of gases is propelled downwards with a high speed. This causes the rocket to move upwards. It looks so simple but it is more complicated thing than anyone can think it is. When this thrust is zero again this rocket can come falling down to the earth by the pull of its gravity. So the rocket has to overcome the gravity and zoom past the atmosphere into the space without any trouble.


This calls for a proper choice of fuel which will burn slowly yet cause an effect so that the rocket can overcome the force of gravity and fly upwards. The fuel should not cause an explosion and at the same time generate heat which will help propel the rocket upward because large amount of heat is generated causing the acceleration of the ages to high speeds. When it moves at a high speed, it can thus overcome gravity. And this way it will explore the space and help in the research work about space and earth.
