Telephones are an example for a truly amazing fact on how far communications have developed. We use the telephones to contact friends, colleagues and family. They are used for local calls and long distance calls and they even help us to speak with people on the other side of the world.
A telephone basically does 2 primary things using the given 2 wires. It helps in transmitting signals and your voice. The signal is the different ring tones that are heard in the modern telephones. Earlier, it used to be a bell that does the function of alerting the user to an incoming call. Then comes the dial which is a digital push button in the modern times and it is used to enter the phone number of the person whom you wish to call.
By picking up a call, the user in effect operates a switch which puts the telephone in to an active state. The technical function carried out here is that a resistance shortage is created inside the wires and this makes the current to flow along the wires. When this process is carried out, the telephone exchange detects the DC current and connects the digit receiver. This sends a dial tone to the user which signals the user that it is ready for you to dial or push the buttons in case of the modern telephones.
These buttons are effectively connected to a tone generator and it helps in generating DTMF tones. This helps the exchange to know who the user wishes to be connected to. When the receiver is replaced in the cradle and if the phone is inactive, the bell and the other alerting devices are connected to a capacitor. At this position, there is no shortage in the line and so the exchange knows that the phone is inactive. This actually help us to understand that the bell is connected electrically and when a call comes to your number, the exchange sends a high voltage pulsating signal that sets the phone ringing .
When the person picks up the phones to answer, the switch disconnects the bell and connects the voice part. This confirms to the exchange that the call has been answered. The voice part of the phone is in the handset and it consists of a transmitter and a receiver. Once the phone is placed in the hook, and the callers have finished talking, the DC current ceases to flow and this proves to be a signal to the exchange and the call is disconnected.
