Resistors are devices that resist the electric current from flowing. These resistors are found to be made in different shapes and sizes for various purposes and uses. Each of the resistors will have a code to know about its entities and recognize its use and application. But the size of some resistors is too tiny to write some codings using some figures and numbers.

Therefore, this situation called for another method that would be simple as well easy to execute and also well accepted and understood by the customers. Thus was born the color code. Each color denoted a particular reading of the Ohms a measure of the electrical resistance of the substances.
The tolerance level of the resistors was categorized into two. The first is with a tolerance level of 5 to 10 percent and the second from 1 to 2 percent. The former had four bands of colors and the latter five. The last color denotes the tolerance level in each. These are single digit numbers from 0 to 9 for the different resistor code values.


A chart reading and matching will tell you the dimensions of the resistor. Another chart for the multiplier is available. The multiplier can be anything from zero to hundred thousand or even a fraction of the value. The tolerance chart shoes the figures in percentages. Thus reading of the codes and matching them from the chart will help you recognize the resistor’s category easily.

Thus after reading the color codes and finding their respective values you have a set of numbers. To know the exact value of the resistor you need to combine all the values and find out for yourself what the small device stands for.
