Polystyrene is made by many companies now. The Dow Chemical Company makes it in the brand name of Styrofoam. Benzene and erethylene are the basic substances used to make this indispensible substance of today. Initially polystyrene was made form a natural resin by a German scientist in the mid part of the nineteenth century. But only after nearly a century was it really put to use.
It has become an indispensible material now because today people prefer to utilize use and throw substances now in their busy life. The reasons are many for this but the use of this material is daily rising. Most of the plastic cups, plates, etc. used only once and disposed off are mainly made for this polystyrene and Styrofoam brand is one of the biggest suppliers of this plastic.
This has some wonderful properties like it can be injected extruded, molded, etc. this means that we can shape it in any way we want for our use. Thus its applications are manyfold and its dependence has become so much that it will take another equal or better material to replace it.

The foamed polystyrene that is Styrofoam is made by applying heat in the form of steam to the beads of polystyrene. At a high temperature it expands and softens. It is allowed to cool and then it is put into molds by again reheating the foam. This is much lighter than the original substance.
It finds use in many ways, for instance, in packaging by the manufacturing industries, to create disposable utensils like cups, plates, etc. that are used during outings or times when standard tableware cannot be made use of, and also molds can be made that can fit around goods, for example, glassware, electronic machines, etc.
Though it finds various uses it is not advisable to use this as it is a toxic substance and can cues harm to our health by constantly using them in every possible way.
