What is a Memory Card Reader?

A memory card reader is a small device, with the help of which the data's on a memory card can be accessed and transferred. Almost all card readers could write, and possibly function as a pen drive together with the memory card. Flash memory cards are obtainable in a variety of formats.


They act as a removable storage device for various equipments similar to digital camera, camcorder, mobile phone, audio player etc. Memory card reader can be a single card reader or a multiple card reader. The difference is that the first one can read only a single type of memory card while the second one can read a number of memory card formats.


If you do not use a memory card reader, you need to connect the digital device directly to the computer through a USB cable. For example, if you own a digital camera and intend to transfer the photos taken to your computer system, you have two ways. One is to connect the camera directly to the computer via the USB port using a USB cable or just take out the memory card from the camera and insert it in the memory card slot of the computer using a memory card reader.


The advantage with the latter is that the device is not attached neither required nor hence saves battery power and additionally the device depreciation. Secondly memory cards can be read directly by a computer without any software which greatly simplifies the work.


It is common for people of this age to carry more than one digital device that uses memory cards, with each unit having a different variety of flash card in it. So a multiple memory card reader is highly useful for everyone as it accepts a variety of cards in different sizes.


Memory card readers are very compact. They are hardly bigger than a memory card. Some memory card readers are designed internally, but the disadvantage is that they are not portable. External card readers are just the ideal ones as they are portable and can be used with any laptop, or a desktop.
