An assisted living community is a type of housing for adults who need assistance with their daily activities. These adults are generally those who might not be able to live safely alone at home, but does not actually need a specialized care that is provided by nursing homes. Whether it is public or private assisted living community, the facility is opened 24 hours a day where health care, meals, and assistance with simple everyday activities will be provided. Assisted living tends to be a long-term option for senior citizens who might have problems with memory, have limited control over their mobility, or is facing other situations that make living alone unsuitable.

What assisted living communities actually do is to help these seniors live independently. They basically look at each resident’s individual needs and come up with a customized care plan to help the senior to achieve independence in their life. In the meantime, the resident has their own opportunity to choose how they would like to live there or what they would like to do as though they are living at home. To these communities, ensuring that a senior still has a sense o dignity and respect is absolutely important, as that will be their motivation on becoming better in their life.

The appearance that these assisted living communities take after is one that looks like an apartment. Their units would either be a studio or a one bedroom, and may come with a small kitchen in the apartment so they may cook meals other than those provided by the community. This way, the residents would feel that they have some freedom to do what they want like at their own home, instead of one with many restrictions like those of a medical facility. As this is so, the cost of assisted living communities tend to cost a little more than a regular apartment, but is less costly when compared to nursing homes. Also, private assisted living tends to be costlier than public ones, as there may be special services that are available.

Other than the basic care services, these communities have recreational and wellness programs for their residents as well. There is a daily schedule which these residents will need to follow so that they may increase their overall wellness to help them live independently. There are also shuttle busses provided so they can go for medical appointments or have other things to do outside the community. This way, they do actually experience a sense of independence but do not need to worry about finding transportation. Plus, there are housekeeping and laundry services.

Of course, there are staffs that are available all day and night so that they can attend to emergencies should one rise. This allows their residents to feel a sense of security and safety that they would not have if they lived alone. If the residents need help with some basic tasks like bathing or dressing up, the staffs is also trained to help.
